What is the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy for the .NET Framework?

Beginning with version 4.5.2 and later, .NET Framework is defined as a component of the Windows operating system (OS). Components receive the same support as their parent products, therefore, .NET Framework 4.5.2 and later follows the lifecycle policy of the underlying Windows OS on which it is installed.

What is a component?

A component is defined as a set of files or features that are included with a Microsoft product. Components may be shipped with the product included in a product service pack or update or released at a later date as a web download.

Will I need to recompile/rebuild my applications to use .NET Framework 4.5.2 and later versions?

.NET Framework 4.5.2 and later versions are compatible, in-place updates on top of .NET Framework 4, 4.5, or 4.5.1. This means we expect applications built on previous .NET 4.x versions to continue running on .NET Framework 4.5.2 and later versions. Recompiling of apps to target these versions is not necessary.

Are there any breaking changes in .NET Framework 4.5.2? Why do you include these changes?

There are a very small number of changes/fixes in .NET Framework 4.5.2 and later versions that are not fully compatible with earlier .NET versions. That said we recommend customers validate their deployments by updating the .NET runtime to .NET 4.5.2 or later in a pre-production environment first before rolling out a newer version in the production environment.

OS X contains several umbrella frameworks for major areas of functionality. Umbrella frameworks group several related frameworks into a larger framework that can be included in your project. When writing software, link your project against the umbrella framework; do not try to link directly to any of its subframeworks. Accelerate Framework

Xcode Frameworks

Xcode and all of its supporting tools and libraries reside in a portable directory structure. This directory structure makes it possible to have multiple versions of Xcode installed on a single system or to have Xcode installed on a portable hard drive that you plug in to your computer when you need to do development. This portability means that the frameworks required by the developer tools are installed in the <Xcode>/Library/Frameworks directory, where <Xcode> is the path to the Xcode installation directory. Table A-9 lists the frameworks that are located in this directory.

System Libraries

Some specialty libraries at the BSD level are not packaged as frameworks. Instead, OS X includes many dynamic libraries in the /usr/lib directory and its subdirectories. Dynamic shared libraries are identified by their .dylib extension. Header files for the libraries are located in the /usr/include directory.

Dotnet Core Mac Os

OS X uses symbolic links to point to the most current version of most libraries. When linking to a dynamic shared library, use the symbolic link instead of a link to a specific version of the library. Library versions may change in future versions of OS X. If your software is linked to a specific version, that version might not always be available on the user’s system.
