I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro my son tried to update the OS to Mojave it has a viedo card in it that apple says will work with Mojave. After several attempts it is Black screen now I took out the SSD drive that has OS and apps on it and put back the old spinner drive with OS and apps on it and it still is black screen any ideas? Might be a firmware update issue. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8623418 Also, have you tried resetting the PRAM and doing an SMC reset?

My son says he tried the PRAM reset and look to the other. What I don’t understand is why when I put the old spinner HD with the old OS on it why it is still black screen. Thank you for the info. charles354

Thanks to all my son finally got the spinner drive to mount and once it was open it showed the the SSD drive to be locked but files could be copied so everything was copied to the spinner the we cloned the SSD drive from the spinner and it works. It must have been some type of firmware issue. We were online with apple and they were trying to load some firmware so it would take the high Sierra OS which was needed to upgrade to Mojave. So after this I am not going to try and go to Mojave O S. I will just wait till Photoshop stops upgrading. Thank you charles354

I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro too. I am probably not upgrading to Mojave. I have pretty much decided it is time to replace the entire computer. Video card firmware seems to be the tricky part of the upgrade.

You can’t switch boot drives by holding down the option key. You have to use startup in system preferences. If you are using a USB 3.0 card, you probably can’t boot from a drive attached to it. An external drive on usb 2 is slow. REALLY SLOW. I gave up and mounted an extra drive in a spare bay as my destination. You likely need to put in your original video card if you’ve upgraded. My suggestion - pull all the expansion cards that did not come originally installed in your Mac out. That’s as far as I’ve made it so far, except that the Radeon 580 uses an 8 pin power cable. The two six pins that you likely have won’t work. OWC and amazon sell adapters. Hopefully mine arrives tomorrow..

That is what I was told also that to get to High Sierra you needed the original video card installed. I am in the process of trying to find one. Not sure what I am going to do when I find it. Not sure if it is worth it. It might be better to just wait until Adobe PS does not work with Sierra and then make the decision. I only use this Mac Pro for Photo Shop. I am currently running High Sierra and keep thinking maybe I should just upgrade my video card and keep my Mac Pro for a while longer. I really have no complaints about performance and I bet the video card would speed things up. I have been thinking that I should save my money to put toward a new computer. I can upgrade to the 'Sapphire 11265-05-20G Radeon Pulse RX 580 8GB GDDR5 Dual HDMI / DVI-D / Dual DP OC with Backplate (UEFI) PCI-E Graphics Card Graphic Cards' for under $250 with the two adapters I need. If I can get another year or two out of this rig it might make sense to me. The reviews seem to imply that this was a plug and play upgrade for Mac pro. New Mac Pros are due later this year. I would like to see what they are. Doubt I can afford it. The Mac Mini is what I am leaning toward and figure I will need an eGPU and Thunderbolt drive enclosure for it. I am probably in the $2500 range if I do all this. My wife's iMac needs replacing too. For her we usually buy refurbished iMac from Apple. Maybe I should go this route too. I am not sure what to do.

Well after much cussing, my machine is running Mojave! I have no idea how it finally started working. For me the big hurdle was getting to High Sierra. Interestingly, it was only after I pulled out my original video card and put in the Radeon 580 that the thing would boot a fresh install of High Sierra. Once I found this adapter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3T6C2K/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_3FvpCbNKH7ZD3 And was able to get High Sierra running, the next upgrade to Mojave was easy. I'm adding some hard drive space and hope this will keep me going for another year or until I find a great deal on the B&S board.

Check compatibility
